Kitchen Swap #2 – Ditching Plastic Cutting Boards

In today’s world, reducing plastic use in the kitchen is more important than ever. One of the simplest yet most impactful changes you can make is swapping out plastic cutting boards for glass or wooden alternatives. Not only do these options look more stylish and natural, but they also offer durability and better hygiene while cutting down on plastic waste. In this post, we’ll explore why making the switch is a smart choice and recommend some of the best glass and wooden cutting boards available on Amazon to help you get started.

Plastic cutting boards can develop deep grooves over time, trapping food particles and bacteria while also shedding tiny plastic particles into your food. Studies suggest that microplastics in our diet may have potential health risks, making it wise to minimize exposure where possible. In contrast, wooden cutting boards have natural antimicrobial properties, and glass boards offer a non-porous surface that’s easy to sanitize. By choosing these alternatives, you’re not only reducing plastic waste but also creating a safer, healthier food preparation environment for you and your family.

In this article, I will show you several options for products on Amazon that are plastic free. I chose this swap to reduce our exposure to microplastics in our home and food.

#1 Wood or Bamboo Cutting Boards

Wooden cutting boards have been around for ages. The pros for using wood are that it has natural antimicrobial properties, it’s a naturally occurring product in nature and they go with any kitchen décor theme: homestead, modern, cozy, industrial, minimalist, and the list goes on. Some of the cons for wooden cutting board use are that they will need to be hand washed, they shouldn’t be ran through the dishwasher.

#2 Glass Cutting Boards

Glass cutting boards are also a great option. They offer non-porous surfaces so they can be sanitized or put in the dishwasher, great for cutting raw meat. They also coordinate with any kitchen décor theme you may have. Some of the cons for glass cutting boards are that they can break more easily and sometimes the rubber feet on the bottom can move or disappear over time.

#3 Stainless Steel Cutting Boards

Stainless steel cutting boards are another great choice. They offer non-porous surfaces so they can be sanitized or put in the dishwasher, great for cutting raw meat. They are extremely durable and have a sleek design, but can be harsh on knives. The drawback to these is that they typically come with a reverse side of wheat straw and PP. PP is polypropylene which is a BPA free plastic. So, unfortunately this item may still contain plastics on one side.

Switching to glass, wooden or stainless steel (without the wheat straw side) cutting boards is a small yet significant step toward a more eco-friendly and healthier kitchen. Not only do they reduce plastic exposure in your home, but they also offer superior durability and aesthetic appeal. Whether you’re drawn to the elegance of glass or the classic charm of wood, there’s a perfect option for your cooking needs. Check out our top recommendations on Amazon and make the switch today—your kitchen (and the planet) will thank you!
