But, with the sides being made of nylon, canvas or similar, there is a greater chance for it to be crushed and contents damaged.

Wheels or no wheels: 

I think it’s safe to say that the majority of luggage has wheels these days. With the long walks to and from terminals, most people would prefer to pull or push their bag rather than carry it over their shoulder. But what type of wheels would you prefer? Most of the newer styles of suitcases are built with spinner wheels. This means that the bag can be rolled in any direction while sitting upright on the floor making it easier to navigate in tight spaces. The other type of wheels are inline skate wheels. These are wheels that can only roll forwards and backwards in a straight line while being tilted at an angle. This works best when pulled behind you.

Large suitcases for checked baggage or small luggage for carry on: 

Do you prefer to check your bag and carry on less or not check any luggage and use a mini suitcase? This seems to be a pretty even split from what I’ve noticed! Checking your bag typically means you can pack and bring more with you on your trip. You also have less to keep track of while navigating through the airport. But, when you check a bag, you’re definitely placing the responsibility onto someone else to get your bag delivered safely and on time. If you choose to use a mini suitcase to only carry on, there will be pros and cons here, too. Keeping your luggage with you means it’s going to arrive at your destination right along with you. There also won’t be any checked baggage fees. The downsides are that you have to keep track of it everywhere you go and also follow the strict rules for size to ensure it fits in the overhead compartments. Don’t forget, there’s always the chance that if the plane gets to be too full, you’ll be asked to check your carry on at the gate!

Check the weight of the empty suitcase: 

Double check your suitcase weight! Your suitcase is going to add to the overall weight of your luggage so looking for one that is lightweight will help reduce your chances of paying a heavy bag fee. Hard-shells will typically weigh more than the softsided styles though most newer styles are made to be more lightweight. You will have to decide, are you okay with sacrificing a few pounds to have more protection from a hard-shell?

Material durability and water resistance:
